The Shaggy Dog: LIVE

I bet there were a whole bunch of people that had a chance to go to Woodstock, but didn't go.

BUDDY: Hey, wanna go see Woodstock?
SHEMP: Woodstock? The yellow bird from Snoopy?
BUDDY: No.
SHEMP: Then I'm not interested.

That guy probably spends every day thinking about how he missed it.

He had a chance to go to one of the most talked about shows of all time and he missed it.

I may have done the same thing this weekend.

I went to see The Shaggy Dog, Tim Allen's latest attempt to say "HEY! I used to be a drug dealer, but now I am a role model to your kids."

Robert Downey Jr. is along for the ride in this flick, but your kids won't look up to him.

He's really short.

By the way, here is a picture of Tim Allen's mug shot from his cocaine arrest in 1978:

He spent the next 30 months in jail.

Tim has also been arrested for drunk driving in 1997. He didn't have a silly mustache in 1997, so I am not interested in seeing any photos from that arrest.

Anyway, I saw the film.

But, I saw it at a multiplex.

I did not see it at Disney's El Capitain Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

I love the El Capitain (I know, saying "The El Capitain" is like saying "the the captain" or "el the captain.")

The theater is ALWAYS a great place to see ANY film, but their showing of The Shaggy Dog might just be the greatest single theater experience of all time.

Take a look at the advertisement:

See! "Shaggy" go onstage and does tricks before the show! Isn't that awesome??!??!?

He carries flowers, catches a Frisbee, dances and appears to give a "black power" salute by raising his paw in the air.

Isn't that cute?

I look around at the multiplex and saw NOTHING like this. There was a fat guy there who MIGHT have been wearing Tim Allen's old mustache.

He did let me call it "Shaggy" when I asked him. But he got really mad at me when I threw a Frisbee at his nose.

  1. I did see Beethoven (the dog) a few times at Universal Studios (he was in the Animal Actors Show) back in the 1990s.

They are billing this new movie as a remake of the Shaggy Dog (1959). What do you think? I think it is more of a remake of the Shaggy DA (1976). It is reusing the title from the Shaggy Dog and plot from the Shaggy DA… Enough of the debate, on with the review…

This movie is a typical Disney Film which is really designed for kids. I loved this film; it's one of those movies that almost convinced me that great romances are a thing of the real world and not just good film. Nice chatty picture, fun all the way; a tad off center due to the looks of the "ugly" girl, but well worth a view. If you know me personally you know I'm not a fan of Tim Allen. "The Shaggy Dog" does very little to change my mind. It is a movie probably unworthy of comment. Yet here I sit. This is another Disney product and if you were to make it a double feature with "Eight Below" you would see how Disney has become an entirely inflexible studio, churning out essentially the same conservative family move time and time again. Robert Downey Jr. and Danny Glover are both in this. And it's painful to watch them trying to put in real performances with this awful material. They do what they can. But they can't save the movie that maybe could have been good if Tim Allen weren't in it. This is just awful dreck all the way around. The film kept with that and I could not find anything in it that would give reason not to let a child see it. I saw this one with my son and both of us enjoyed it. I have to admit, this is the first film I have seen Tim Allen in in which he is just a normal "guy". He is not the hero that is out to make equal rights for everyone. I do like some of those films too but this one he is just a normal person trying to get some answers about his true identity. I liked that. Dr. Abby Barnes a radio question-and-answer show host who unwittingly entices a listener over the radio with her soothing voice and personality. This listener, Brian, tries to meet the Abby from the radio, but Noelle is mistaken for the real thing when Brian comes to the studio. The story line was very predictable from this point and so was some of the comedy. However, it was presented in a way that kept the film entertaining. I found myself laughing several times with this one. If the plot had been more original, it would likely have been a better film. However, I don't think that was what the director was looking for. I think he was just looking to make an entertaining film. I think that is just what he did. It is increasingly difficult to find movies that are suitable for children, both for their entertainment value and their lack of inappropriate content. The Shaggy Dog is a thoughtful story that the whole family can enjoy. The plot is complex enough to hold the interest of the oldest members of the family while not being too involved or frightening for the youngest children. You're also able to walk away from this movie without having to rationalize to your children why foul language was used, nor do you have to worry about the modern tendency of Disney movies to try to sexualize children.

  3. Sweetie-I think your comment about the guy inthe theater with the mustache is one of the funniest things that you have written. I also noticed that in his mugshot Tim Allen looks like Geraldo Rivera. No wonder he shaved it off then.

Wow. Tim Allen just gained a lot of street cred with me.
